Isao Shirakawa was born on September 12, 1939, in Toyama Prefecture, Japan. He received the B. Eng., M. Eng., and Ph. D. degrees all in electronic engineering from Osaka University in 1963, 1965, and 1968, respectively.
He joined the Department of Electronic Engineering, Faculty of Engineering, Osaka University in 1968 as a research assistant, where he was promoted to Associate Professor in 1973 and then to Professor in 1987, and is now Professor in the Department of Information Systems Engineering. Meanwhile, he was with Electronic Research Lab., University of California, Berkeley, as a Visiting Scholar in 1974-1975.
He has been engaged in education and research mainly on basic circuit theory, logic design, applied graph theory, CAD algorithms for VLSIs, and hardware algorithms/ architectures for implementing system VLSIs/IPs. He is a co-author of twelve books on basic circuit theory, applied graph theory, and VLSI CAD.
He is a Fellow of IEEE (Institute of Electrical and electronic Engineers), and a member of a number of institutes, such as ACM, IEICE, and so forth.
He served as Vice President of IEEE CAS Society in 1995-1996 as well as BoG Member of IEEE CAS Society in 1994-1996. He served as Program Chair of the first Asia and South-Pacific Design Automation Conference (ASP-DAC) in 1995, Student Activities Committee Chair of IEEE Region 10 in 1993-1994, Associate Editor of IEEE Transactions on Circuits and Systems I in 1991-1993, Program Chair of the first Asia-Pacific Conference on Circuits and Systems (APCCAS) in 1992, Program Chair and Finance Chair of IEEE International Symposium on Circuits and Systems (ISCAS) in 1985 and 1991, respectively, and Chairman of Tokyo Chapter of IEEE CAS Society in 1988. He is also one of the founders of the Joint Technical Conference on Circuits/Systems, Computers and Communications (JTC-CSCC) established in 1986 originally for Japanese and Korean CAS Societies.
His main IEICE (Institute of Electronic, Information and Communication Engineers) activities are as follows: Member of Board of Directors (in charge of Editorial Board) in 1996-1997, Chairman of AdCom of Group on Engineering Science in 1991, Member of Board of Trustees in 1989-1990, and Chairman of Technical Group on CAS in 1987.
